Richard Newell

Richard G. Newell is a technology executive working at the intersection of AI, energy and industrial systems, markets, and public policy.

Most recently, he served as CTO for Sustainability Solutions and Chief Sustainability Officer at C3 AI, where he led enterprise AI strategy, commercialization, and deployment across energy, industrial, and other large-scale enterprise environments. His work spanned product strategy, ecosystem partnerships, and executive customer engagement, translating advanced analytics, machine learning, and generative and agentic AI into measurable operational and business value.

Previously, Newell served as President and CEO of Resources for the Future, Administrator of the U.S. Energy Information Administration, and Senior Economist on the President's Council of Economic Advisers. At Duke University, he was a professor of energy and environmental economics and founded the university's Energy Initiative and Energy Data Analytics Lab.

Newell advises companies and investors on technology and market strategy, AI and data analytics, energy and infrastructure, and the policy and regulatory environment. He brings extensive experience evaluating emerging technologies and markets and helping organizations translate technology into scalable commercial and operational impact.

He holds a PhD from Harvard University, an MPA from Princeton University, and BS and BA degrees from Rutgers University.
